NEWSLETTER N°2

Offshore wind energy,
digitally twinned

for reliability

Welcome to the second edition of our DTWO newsletter!

Since the release of DTWO’s first newsletter, there have been significant advancements in both the technical and scientific aspects of the project, as well as the implementation of scientific Digital Twin (DT) Modules components in the DTWO architecture.

First, the initial version of the federated DTWO digital architecture is in place, and we enter the period of testing and compliance.

Second, scientific integration has taken off through integrating example use cases into platform prototype, and at the same time, we assemble and execute prototype workflows through use cases.

Third, the ensemble weather modeling using coupled and uncoupled atmosphere, wave, ocean models are progressing and we are near completion of simulation of all test scenarios, both with and without wind farms.

Fourth, inter and intra wind farm wakes are being modeled and validated, and the models are being implemented into DestinE and DTWO infrastructure.

Fifth, the Plume plugin in DestinE extremes DT is now capable of capturing extreme events (high or low winds, waves), and climate DT is also connected to DTWO.

Sixth, the turbulence model including both 2D and 3D turbulence is in place, together with global offshore atlas for turbulence intensity from height of 10 m to 200 m.

Seventh, we kicked off three “application” oriented DT modules. The first one is Module Siting for which the corresponding models are for energy yield, turbulence, waves, currents, environmental indicators (e.g., soil) etc, and they are being connected to other DT modules through the DT architecture. Module Turbine is also being connected to the DT architecture through use cases to provide outputs including Remaining useful lifetime, Anomaly indicator and alarms, Reliability, Downtime and cost, and Power reduction. The third is the DT Module Grids, where we made progress in Energy system optimization, Long-term planning and grid integration and Power forecasting methods and use in farm controller. The work on short-term operation and dispatch, storage assets for ancillary services has just started.

Please find out details of our work and dissemination in this newsletter, and stay tuned!

We look forward to your feedback!
