NEWSLETTER N°1

Offshore wind energy,
digitally twinned
for reliability

Welcome to the first edition of our DTWO newsletter!

DTWO is a Horizon Europe project funded by the European Union to develop federated digital twins to forecast offshore wind power production. The project began in June 2024 and will run until May 2027.

As the offshore wind energy is under development with unprecedented speed and scale globally, the DTWO project aims to be a pioneering initiative in the digitalization of key components of the offshore sector.

The consortium has been busy working on building the digital twin architecture, with initial steps in scientific implementation of a wide array of existing models and data sources. This includes the integration of use cases to the Destination Earth Digital Twins (DestinE DT). We are testing and running mesoscale atmosphere, wave and engineering models for several scenarios with wind farm clusters, and the results will be used to guide the use of data from DestinE DT. The outputs from these models include wake effect from both wind farm clusters and turbines, and they will be used for siting, turbine life cycle assessment, grid balance and energy systems, through use cases.

With our half-yearly newsletter, we will keep you updated on the project’s progress, as well as relevant news and articles.

We are interested in your feedback.

In this first issue: the project website; the latest project meeting and events; two scientific papers co-authored by DTWO coordinator Xiaoli Guo Larsén: Investigation of wind farm impacts on surface waves using coupled numerical simulations and The impact of climate change on extreme winds over northern Europe according to CMIP6; the project presentation video; the leaflet; and upcoming events.

Sincerely,

Xiaoli Guo Larsén

SCIENTIFIC PAPERS

The first publication (Investigation of wind farm impacts on surface waves using coupled numerical simulations) investigated how the wind farms affect the surface waves using atmosphere, wave and wind farm wake coupled numerical modeling, together with flight measurements over wind farms in the German Bight. The study provides recommendations for mesoscale model setup in DTWO.

ScienceDirect

The second publication (The impact of Climate Change on extreme winds over northern Europe according to CMIP6) studies the possible effect of climate change on the extreme wind over Northern Europe using data from 18 models of the CMIP6 with high-emission shared socioeconomic pathway 5-8.5 scenario. The data are corrected to the equivalent 10-min temporal resolution using the spectral correction method. This study provides DTWO a method as well as datasets for future extreme winds in Northern Europe, and information relevant for cost related estimation.
