New DTWO interview: connecting turbine reliability, weather and wake effects through digital twins

The turbines module focuses on modelling turbine reliability and remaining useful life, investigating potential failures and using anomaly detection techniques to better predict downtime. Ultimately, this information can contribute to understanding an issue that matters across the offshore wind value chain: how turbine performance and downtime can affect the cost and reliability of wind energy.

Bringing the different pieces together

One of the distinctive aspects of DTWO is the connection between different layers of information.

Weather models, wake models and turbine reliability models can each provide valuable insights individually. DTWO aims to bring them together, making it possible to investigate, for example, how weather conditions and wake effects from neighbouring turbines could influence turbine reliability and remaining useful life.

The interview also explores one of the challenges facing this type of research: access to appropriate wind farm data. The DTWO partners are addressing this by investigating different available datasets, exploring alternative data sources and combining expertise from wind energy, modelling and machine learning.

This multidisciplinary collaboration is central to the project. By bringing together partners with different technical backgrounds, DTWO can connect existing knowledge and develop new approaches to understanding offshore wind farm behaviour.
